The Lion King’s Oscar-winning love ballad "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" was originally intended as a duet between Timon and Pumbaa!

This version was even storyboarded and recorded! Predictably, the song’s composers, Tim Rice and Elton John, were none too pleased that the film’s producers did not intend to take them seriously. Ultimately this version was scrapped, but the entire song nearly didn’t make it into the final version of the film either! A few weeks before the film opened in theaters, Sir Elton was given his own special screening. John was shocked to find that his love ballad had been cut! Fortunately, he managed to successfully campaign for the song’s inclusion in the short time that followed. It’s a good thing too! “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” later won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

You’ll find the original “Timon & Pumbaa” version of the song below. As you may notice, much of this edition still snuck its way into the movie as comic relief on either side of the heartfelt ballad!
